Dr. Particular was set to operate on a patient inside the Operation Theater in half hour. Things weren’t going well for Neelam who was going to assist him for the first time.
“This is not Sir’s instrument set! Where are his instruments?” yelled the Matron in charge. She did not need this today! These words set in motion the one task that most of us dread. SEARCH! The anatomy of search was predictable if one were to “dissect” it – Panic –> Opening of Set 1 –> Frustration –> Opening of Set 2 –> More frustration –> Some phone calls –> Some angry words –> More phone calls –> A batch of quick reprocessing –> Rushing instruments to the OT –> All round feelings of relief.
Scenes quite like these are witnessed day in and day out in hospitals and operating rooms across India. What such searches also bring to an already stressed environment are loss of peace of mind, generating additional processing work for all the unnecessary sets opened up, disruption in workflow and wasted effort.
